Woman Gives Birth While Shopping At Target!

Heavily pregnant Tanya St. Preux Picault went shopping in her neighborhood Target store in North Georgia when she went into active labor.

Thankfully, Caris Lockwood, a labor and delivery nurse was also shopping with family members when her mother noticed a woman in labor. Lockwood immediately sprang into action! And as she was helping Picault get to the car, her water broke.

So, right by the store’s entrance, Lockwood delivered Picault’s baby: a healthy 7 lb., 10 oz. boy named Maleek.

Picault said she began feeling contractions after leaving a restroom. Soon after that, Lockwood’s mother, Lisa Bozeman, approached her. “I saw a very pregnant woman who looked to be in pain,” Bozeman said. “She mentioned that she needed to get a few things, then ‘might’ go to the hospital to be checked since her contractions seemed to be getting strong.”  she told FOX 5.

Not longer after, Boseman went back  to Picault to ask if her daughter who’s a labor and delivery nurse, come and look at her.

“God had her there for me that day,” Picault said. “She did such a great job. It was on the news, and I recorded it so I can show [Maleek] as he gets older.”

‘I didn’t think she was going to deliver that fast at first, but then she had a really painful contraction and her water broke. As a labor and delivery nurseI kind of knew what was about to happen’ Lockwood said.

Target has said: ‘We commend the nurses and medical team that jumped in to help and we’re happy to hear mother and baby are doing well.’

Picault and Lockwood said they’ve kept in touch since the birth.

The hospital shared a photo of the nurse and the new mom and her baby on Facebook, along with this caption: “An ordinary trip to Target quickly became extraordinary for Piedmont Atlanta Hospital labor and delivery nurse Caris Lockwood. Fellow shopper Tanya St. Preux went into active labor as she was shopping, so Caris jumped right in to deliver the 7-pound, 10-ounce healthy baby boy right there at the store’s entrance.”

“We’re happy to hear that the mother and baby are doing well and wish them all the best.”

Here’s the cute babies Hayven and Rosealyn Starks Birth Story.

Jade Starks wanted one baby but got two! Despite the difficulty she had with breathing and being very nervous of delivery, Jade says her labor & delivery was the best experience possible. She welcomed her twins girls via a scheduled c-section and it was a total adrenaline rush; she cried when she heard their first cry and holding her girls for the first time was totally love at first sight.  We could not be more happy with our two blessings, she says, they bring us so much joy everyday and we couldn’t imagine doing life any different.

Jade however noted that being a parent of twins isn’t as easy as it looks –– you get no days off from motherhood, but we are thankful for our twin girls and so exited to watch them grow and thrive together.

Baby’s First Cry

The joy of hearing your Baby’s First Cry is almost an indescribable feeling. Why is it so important to hear your baby cry within the first minute of birth?

During your baby’s stay in the womb, the umbilical cord carries oxygen and carbon dioxide from the placenta into your baby’s bloodstream. As soon as your baby is born, they should begin crying within the first 30 seconds to one minute of life,  his/ her first cry will be at the top of your doctor’s priority list.  The reason is, your baby’s first cry acts as a kick-starter for their little lungs, as it helps them to get rid of any amniotic residue and other secretion in the lungs and nasal passages.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BTUDJU6lRTi/

It is considered a medical emergency when a baby does not cry/ breathe immediately after being born, the baby who cannot breathe cannot establish independent life outside the mother and will have to undergo what is known as neonatal resuscitation which simply means that the baby will require some form of assistance to begin breathing.

The first cry hence signifies a successful transition from “breathing” fluid in the womb to breathing air after being born. This breath sounds like a gasp, as the newborn’s central nervous system reacts to the sudden change in temperature and environment.

Once the baby takes the first breath, a number of changes occur in the infant’s lungs and circulatory system:

  • Increased oxygen in the lungs causes a decrease in blood flow resistance to the lungs.
  • Blood flow resistance of the baby’s blood vessels also increases.
  • Amniotic fluid drains or is absorbed from the respiratory system.
  • The lungs inflate and begin working on their own, moving oxygen into the bloodstream and removing carbon dioxide by breathing out (exhalation).

Now you understand that your baby’s first cry is synonymous with their first breath and perhaps a way of saying hello to you and the world!

Benefits And Risks of Water Birth

As the name suggests, water birth is childbirth that occurs in water. A water birth could take place in a hospital, a birthing center, or at home with a doctor, nurse, or midwife present to help you through the labor and delivery process. Below, we highlight the major Benefits And Risks of Water Birth.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BOx2KTpBrdE/?taken-by=pregnancy_beyond

Benefits of Water Birth

Benefits for Mother:

  • It relieves pain: Warm water is soothing, comforting, and relaxing, this will help ease the pain of contractions.
  • It supports your weight: The buoyancy of the water makes you feel lighter and enables you to get into more comfortable positions and helps you move around more easily, it also gives you the advantage of working with gravity as your baby is born.

  • Helps tighten uterine muscles: Buoyancy promotes more efficient uterine contractions and improved blood circulation resulting in better oxygenation of the uterine muscles, less pain for the mother, and more oxygen for the baby.
  • It releases feel-good hormones The water seems to reduce stress-related hormones, allowing the mother’s body to produce pain-relieving endorphins.
  • It reduces the risk of tearing: Water causes the perineum (the area between the vagina and anus)  to become more elastic and relaxed, making them more supple and able to stretch to accommodate your baby’s head as it passes through.
  • The relaxing effect of water: A warm bath might help you relax and help you feel more in control.  As you relax physically, you are also able to relax mentally with a greater ability to focus on the birth process.
  • It reduces stress and anxiety: Since the water provides a greater sense of privacy, it can reduce inhibitions, anxiety, and fears.
  • It is peaceful: The pool itself is a quiet, private environment that helps you feel safe and secure while you labor.
  • Support from Father-to-be: partners can get in the pool to support the expectant mothers through birth.

Benefits for Baby:

  • Provides an environment similar to the amniotic sac. Babies born into warm water are often calmer and often appear far more relaxed than babies more in the air.
  • Eases the stress of birth, thus increasing reassurance and a sense of security.
  • Many experts believe that being born into warm water eases a baby’s transition to the outside world

Risks of Giving Birth in Water:

  • Pain relief options are more limited
  • You may have to leave the pool if a complication at delivery develops
  • There may be a risk of infection in a birth pool. As you push out your baby, you may open your bowels. This is entirely normal, and debris will be quickly sieved out by your midwife. But it does introduce the risk of infection. A baby born in that environment could possibly swallow the contaminated water, increasing his risk of infection
  • Getting into a warm bath too early might slow your labor.

My Bump Story: Selina K.Romney.

First-time mama, Selina K.Romney who gave birth to a beautiful baby girl this past April took the time to share the highlights of her pregnancy journey with us in her bump story. Read on for a lovely interview and some stunning photos!

….

What was your first reaction when you found out you were pregnant?

Overly excited! I couldn’t believe it. My husband read the pregnancy test because I was too scared to look (LOL), then he said with so much joy “we’re gonna be parents”! I still couldn’t believe it and then he said “yeah baby you’re a mother now” and I then jumped on him, while laughing and screaming thank you, God! I couldn’t help but shed a tear.

Your funniest memory over the 9 months?

There were so many funny and beautiful moments. My husband and I were thrilled that whenever we rubbed my belly, our baby girl responded by kicking back! She never responded to touch from anyone else. t was such a beautiful way to bond with our baby.

What do you think every woman should know before getting pregnant?

I would advise that she has her baby with the right man.  My husband and I have been through a lot together and built our life together from nothing.  It’s been hard, but the only reason we have made it this far is the true commitment that we share. We got married when I was 19, a new house when I was 20, and now at 21 our first child. Everything is going great, we’re enjoying every bit of it but we sincerely had to work hard for it.

How would you describe the 9-month journey?

Early pregnancy was most difficult, by the second trimester I had lost 12kg. I battled with morning sickness for the first four months, threw up day and night, and couldn’t even drink water! I tried all the remedies but nothing helped, I just couldn’t wait to get over the first trimester. My easiest trimester was the second, my bump started to show and I began to feel the baby move. However, I loved the third trimester best, because I could see her kicks and she responds to our touch in that way we could bond with her better.

Did you have any maternity wear hacks?

There was no need for maternity clothes! I bought stretchy dresses and skirts which I wore my entire pregnancy.
It worked out less expensive, could accommodate my growing bump and I looked great in them too.

Did you have any weird and wonderful cravings?

I tried hard not to give in to my pregnancy food cravings.  I never liked chocolate pre-pregnancy (yes I’m one of the few women that don’t.. LOL) but now I like brownies and white chocolate with nuts. Although all through pregnancy I had like five brownies in all.

What did you struggle with most being pregnant?

I sincerely never felt like I was struggling, we truly enjoyed our pregnancy. No complaints at all!

Name a mama you find inspiring and why?

My mother and mother-in-law. My mother raised 5 children mostly on her own. I don’t even want to think about spending these precious moments alone. My mother-in-law also had to raise her children alone while fighting her illness. We’re grateful for both of them.
baby

How was your birth experience?

It was better than we expected, I had a home birth with no medications or complications. Labor lasted for 11 hours and my contractions were less than a minute apart, I couldn’t have done it without my husband, he massaged my back while I was in labor to help ease off the pain. Can’t complain really, my daughter accepted breast milk within the first hour of birth, and my uterus returned to its original size within 5 days after birth ( I seriously never expected that!).

How do you intend to get your groove back?

I actually feel on fire already! I’m so ecstatic about our new life, we sometimes get tired, but she gives us great joy. I have to admit though I already lost 16kg (35.2lbs) and I fit into pretty much all of my old clothes.
Selina K.Romney Bump Story

What do you think every expectant mom should know before having her baby?

Be wise, be sure to listen to people, be open to advice but don’t let negativity or fear get in your mind. People are quick to speak of the things that can go wrong and you hear all sorts of horror stories but none of that has to be your future if you have faith. Also, expectant moms need to be extra careful with the way they think because it could affect them, the baby and their journey through pregnancy. Be sure to relax, have faith, and enjoy the most beautiful period of your life.

What are your hopes and aspirations for your daughter?

Oh, we wish so many things for our daughter! We want her to be free and to be herself, we want her to be strong and wise, full of health, but mostly to be happy.
Selina K.Romney

DON’T Push:

Thousands Of Women Could Be Saved from Injuries During Child Birth.

Thousands of women could be saved from debilitating injuries. Thanks to a new midwife-led program that aims to dispel the misconception. That’s women during childbirth need to push.

The simple protocol has reduced unintentional damage caused to the body. Particularly, during delivery by 85 per cent in some maternity wards.

Childbirth Cases

Nine in ten women suffer some form of tearing during childbirth. But in more serious cases the injuries can render new mothers incontinent and suffering lifelong nerve problems.

The new programme, designed by staff at Medway Foundation Trust in Kent, has cut the incidence of traumatic tearing from seven per cent to just one per cent of patients.

Delivery Positions

It encourages mothers-to-be to slow down during delivery and consider alternative positions.

It was initiated in response to a call for action by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG). Also, the Royal College of Midwives. Following an alarming rise in severe perineal tearing affecting nearly 14,000 women in 2013 to 2014.

New Guidelines

The new guidelines discourage women from giving birth lying on their backs. ‘We support women in alternative positions. Such as standing, leaning, or giving birth on their knees. Which were common until the 1950s,’ says Ms Smith.

Other features involve coaching women to breathe through contractions instead of urging them to push. Midwives are also discouraged from pulling out the baby by the shoulders during delivery. Instead supporting the baby’s weight as it emerges, which reduces pressure on the perineum.

Midwife Support

Two midwives are present at every birth to ensure the programme is being followed. All women who still suffer a tear are scanned afterward to assess whether they are likely to suffer bowel problems as a result.

Risk factors during labour include larger than the average baby. A baby being born ‘face-up’, use of forceps.

The programme has been so successful in Medway. That the results have been have been published in the European Journal Of Obstetrics & Gynaecology And Reproductive Biology. Also, there are plans to roll it out within the United Kingdom.
