Babymoon: Everything About HAWAII Was Perfect! – Laura “prbossbabe” Gimbert.

Laura “prbossbabe” Gimbert and husband who are expecting a babygirl, recently had their babymoon in Hawaii. She shares some her babymoon adventures with us. Enjoy!

At what week of pregnancy did you take this trip?
I was 31 weeks pregnant at the time.

Your babymoon destination and why?
We decided to travel to Maui, Hawaii, for our babymoon mainly because we wanted a tropical destination where we could relax yet explore and have a bit of adventure too (in a safe-pregnant way!). We also needed to stay national, as I couldn’t fly internationally during my third trimester, and it’s safer to stay local anyways, just in case. We live in Los Angeles and the flight to Hawaii is direct, and pretty easy, not like we were coming from the East coast, so it just all made sense!

How long was the plane trip and how did you cope with flying during pregnancy?
The flight from Los Angeles to Maui was five hours (four hours on our return trip) so it was very easy. I never got to the point where I was uncomfortable. I made sure I drank a lot of water before and during, as well as walked up and down the plane at least once an hour during the duration of the flight, which helped with circulation & inflammation. I also stretched well before and after, and bought healthy snacks to bring on board, so I had good healthy food to rely on (nuts, fruit & yogurt mainly).

How long was your babymoon vacation?
Exactly a week! Perfect time to see everything, relax fully, and get back to reality purely refreshed.

How would you describe your babymoon experience?
Exploring the Island all day to come back to a luxury 5 star hotel (Four Seasons Maui), get pampered at the SPA and have a great room service experience with my husband every night, for a week: perfection!

Fun things to do at this destination
The Island is just stunning, so my favorite thing to do was just get lost & explore it all. We rented a jeep convertible and beach hopped, discovered local places and had amazing fresh fish everyday. I loved watching the sun set in a different location every night, it was magical. And nothing beats an amazing prenatal SPA session at the Four Seasons after the whole day cruising around!

Which of these activities did you enjoy more?
Definitely discovering spots on our own and cruising around the Island with the jeep, sunshine on our face, wind in our hair, and good music! So fun and a great bonding time with the hubby.

Things to know about this destination
The main resorts, including ours, are located in Wailea, which is amazing, but I’d totally recommend renting a car and exploring the rest of the island. North Shore is perfect for surfing (if your husband is looking for a bit of action, giving you an excuse to lay, tan & read a book, ha!). Makena, Big Beach & Lahaina are my favorite beaches. I’d also recommend doing some pregnancy shoots while you are there, nothing beats that scenery, you wont regret it!

Some of the amenities you enjoyed?
Staying at a luxury resort also makes the trip way better, we enjoyed all of the hotel’s amenities including their 5-star breakfast buffet, their adult-only ocean-front infinity pool, their SPA services (I got the best pregnancy massage!), the amazing suite… and overall unbeatable hospitality service. You feel pampered and like a princess, which is exactly what you need before welcoming the newborn!

Funniest thing that happened to you during your babymoon?
I got stuck in a rip current (nothing major, VERY close to the sand). With my bump I felt a bit less agile than normal, and I was laughing so hard I just couldn’t get out of the water. Luckily only my husband saw that, he was laughing harder than me! Ha.

5 essentials to pack for your babymoon and why?
— Cute dresses: comfy but that show off your bump
— A good camera: you’ll want those memories for life!
— Good sunscreen, after sun & lotion (with the growing belly, you’ll want to take extra care of your skin to avoid stretch marks & sun spots)
– -Great books: any type of books are good of course, but I’d definitely recommend also starting to read pregnancy & delivery books, as it’s the perfect down-time to do so.
— Prenatal vitamins & vitamin C: I take vitamin c when I travel to keep my immune system strong, specially while pregnant, since it weakens and I tend to have less greens.

Your babymoon was during the fall season, would this have been a good babymoon destination during the summer months for instance?

Hawaii is the perfect destination year-round since the weather is always great! I would just avoid going during big holidays (like Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc) as the islands get fully-packed then.

5 Keys to a fantastic babymoon?
— Book some SPA sessions before hand
— Book ONE nice dinner before hand (everything else I recommend going with the flow and doing tons of room service!)
— Book a NICE hotel/resort, it’s SO worth it!!!
– -Book a convertible (feeling the wind & sunshine on your hair is such a nice feeling on vacation!)
– -Relax!!!

On a scale of 1 – 10 with 10 being the most positive,  would you recommend this destination to other expectant mamas?
10! It’s just perfect, enough to do and explore, yet the best place to relax at.

10 Survival Tactics for Flying with a Baby
We love traveling with our baby. This is not to be confused with loving to fly with her. We may be crazy but we’re not sadistic! After 40+ flights in Rae’s first year ranging from 30min-16hrs long, we’ve come up with a variety of methods to survive plane rides, from the easy early bassinet days to the constantly crawling and mobile moments. Needless to say as she gets older, flying becomes more, …let’s call it “enthusiastic”.
1. Pre-Flight Food Deprivation: Not like Zero Dark Thirty levels, I’m talking just slight withholding of boob juice before the flight for the sake of the greater good. Flight goals with babies are to nurse then nap. In order for her to nurse when I want her to, I may stretch feedings a bit to make sure she’s hungry enough to nurse when we get on-board.
2. Pre-Flight Sleep Manipulation: (insert evil laugh) Prior to our flights, you can find me sitting in a room scheming like Mr. Burns whispering “excellent, Sunday, excellent”. Yes I’m seeking help for this, but in the meantime, my sleep manipulation tactics have worked. If booking the flight during nap-time isn’t possible, then I mess with that day’s sleep schedule so that she’s tired for the flight. I might wake her up a bit early from sleep, or cut her morning nap a little short. All in the name of her being tired enough to nurse and pass out in her dark baby cave created by my nursing cover.
3.Flight-Time Nurse Nurse Nurse Nurse Nurse: (extra points if done to the theme of Rhianna’s “work work work work work”) As Coach Taylor would say, full mouths, big bellies, can’t lose. We all know how magical boobs are, but they become extraordinary at 30,000ft. Between getting your baby’s jaws to open to reduce ear discomfort to filling them up with night-night juice (very different than Mommy’s special night-night juice) I’ve found nothing to be as effective at keeping the airplane gremlin away like nursing does.

4.Baby Seatbelt and Bassinets: Call, confirm and repeat when it comes to securing a bassinet for your 0-6 month-old before a flight. If they’re young enough to go in it, it’s a lifesaver for long plane rides. Once they move to lap infant status, most airlines outside the USA require babies to have an infant seatbelt for takeoff and landing. Since I’m boarding the plane with a hungry, tired, Furby-like creature attached to me, I ask for the infant seatbelt right away. Once in the seat, strap everyone in, nurse and nap. The last thing you want to do is mess with a babe who has just fallen asleep to get their seat belt fastened.

5.Inflight Magazines: Pretend as if you’re the sole provider of the confetti for the Times Square New Years Eve ball drop and RIP THAT SHIT TO SHREDS! They said it’s free to take and no other rules were provided, therefore we assume creative control. There’s something about the noise and physical motion that results in a seriously satisfying situation for all ages. Rae can be whatever she wants when she’s older, but I’m going to suggest her first job be a human paper shredder.

6. Frozen/Cold Water Bottle: It’s cold, it crinkles, and it can be thrown away when it gets chucked on the floor. Can you say airplane toy bingo?! Most airports allow you to bring liquids through security as long as they’re for the baby, so chuck one of these bad boys in the freezer at home and bring it on board. Alternatively, just buy a cold water bottle at the airport and it’ll work just as well for sore teething gums to chew on.

7.Strategic Seating: You know who brings out the best in me? Nope, not Sunday. AIRPORT CHECK-IN PEOPLE. I’m the best version of myself in front of them, all in the name of securing anything from a bulkhead to a blocked middle seat. You would have thought they gave me their left kidney for how much I thank them when they come through with some goodies. And if they’ve given me nothing, at least I’ve pre-chosen a window seat for the baby and me. This way we’re protected from interruptions while nursing, sleeping along with aggressive boarding tactics of fellow passengers, and provides a handy window to play with while she’s awake.

8.Carrier: Whether it’s up to the airplane or down to baggage claim, we’re constantly dealing with stairs. Having her strapped to me compared to trying to wrangle a wiggly baby in my arms has been clutch. It’s important to note that most airlines will not allow you to wear the baby in the carrier for take off and landing, so I don’t use them once on the plane, unless it’s a long haul journey.

9.Snacks: I dare you to name a situation that food hasn’t made better. Ok, maybe swimming to be fair, but it improves most other moments for mammals of all ages. Bringing any kind of snack can earn you loads of time sitting still (and by loads I mean 3-minute increments. Hey we’re traveling with a baby here; let’s keep our expectations low shall we?).

10. Baby Apps: A baby app may only get you 5 minutes of distraction but I’ve done a lot more for a lot less!Babies are like caged animals on flights, so give yourself a fighting chance and combine all of these methods to survive! Considering how tiring flight days are I must be burning calories from all my evil scheming. At this rate I should be Kate Moss by the time she’s 2!

Why not?!
