How to Swaddle a Newborn Baby Safely | Easy Technique | Video

What is Swaddling? How do I swaddle a newborn baby safely?  Swaddling is an ancient practice of wrapping a newborn/ baby snugly and gently in a blanket or sheet to help them feel calm, relax and eventually fall asleep. Being swaddled reminds babies of the womb’s embrace and it is a similar experience to being cuddled skin-to-skin, which may make them sleep more deeply. ( See Video for how to swaddle safely at the bottom of this page).

Most importantly, swaddling promotes safe sleeping in infants and improve the quality of sleep in young babies If you are going to swaddle, evidence suggests it is safest to do it from birth.

How to Swaddle a Newborn Baby Safely

Swaddling prevents:

  • Your newborn baby from startling herself and disrupting sleep.
  • Your baby from scratching or rubbing as they go to sleep, lots of babies scratch or rub as they fall asleep.
  • Babies from turning from their back to a face-down position, potentially protecting them from SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

Safe Sleeping Swaddling Guidance

If you decide to adopt swaddling, please follow the safe sleeping swaddling guidance for babies.

  • Use thin materials
  • Do not swaddle above the shoulders
  • Never put a baby to sleep on their front
  • Do not swaddle too tight
  • Check the baby’s temperature to ensure they do not get too hot
  • Not a good idea to swaddle a baby when bed-sharing. A swaddled baby is not able to effectively move covers from the face or use arms and legs to alert an adult who is too close
  • Stop swaddling as soon as your baby shows any signs of trying to roll over.

She wrote:

I woke up with light contractions at 7 A.M. ( 23 May 2019). I have never had cramps a day in my life so I took a shower and packed a bag for myself.
With my packed bags, I then drove from New Jersey to my mother’s home with heavy traffic and light contractions. I got to my mother’s house at 9:03 A.M, my contractions were getting a little intense so we drove to the hospital to see if my cervix was open and to find out if I was dilated, in the midst of this, I called my midwife and explained what was going on she as asked that we go to the Brooklyn birth center.

2 – 3 Centimeter Dilated

I  got to the Brooklyn Birth Centre at 12:10 and when I got checked, I was only 2-3 CM dilated.
I took a walk around the block, went up the stairs, and kept holding on to the pain for as much as I could’ve. At 3:20 P.M. My midwife checked again my cervix and said I was 90% effaced and 5 CM dilated. (Effacement is the thinning of the cervix, which is measured in percentages. When you’re 100 percent effaced, your cervix has thinned enough for your baby to be born. Dilated is when your cervix openWhen labor begins, the cervix dilates, widening up to 10 centimeters (cm) over time?0
At 4:50 P.M. I asked to go to the room and get in the tub. I had no medicine to control my pain and started shifting my body left to right with hot water running. My water broke finally at 5.20 P.M but alas, my baby had pooped in the sac. The midwife took me out of the tub and checked me, I was 7 CM dilated. At 5:30 PM.  I went back in the water and the midwife informed me that the baby pooped in the sac, this is medically known as Meconium Aspiration. The inhaled meconium can partially or completely block the baby’s airways.

Do you want me to call the ambulance?

The midwife then asked “do you want me to call the ambulance and we go straight to the hospital or do you want to try and push. If he doesn’t come out within the next 30 mins to an hour we will have to rush to the hospital“
I SAID NO HES COMING OUT ‼19 mins later I don’t know how I did it but I naturally pushed that baby right on out. I really couldn’t believe I had the strength and power to do that but I DID ♥‼
My first child, Naidam was born at 5:49 P.M. MAY 23, 2019 by unmedicated water birth.
4 hours of light contractions
6 hour Labor
8 pounds & 5.5 ounce
50 C M / 20-inch Length
You did it, mama. You pushed him out like a champ! Thank you for sharing your story with PregnancyBeyond

Giving Birth to your Baby: The Second Stage of Labor

(Scroll down for video of a mother pushing out her baby)

The second stage of labor also known as the pushing stage begins when the cervix is completely open (dilated) and lasts until you have pushed out your baby.

This stage of labor is also commonly referred to as the stage of expulsion. At this stage, your cervix is 10 centimeters open and fully dilated.

The pushing stage can take from a few minutes up to a few hours to birth your baby into the world. In most cases, it might take longer for first-time moms than women who have had a baby before.

A small number of women will require assistance with their births, either by forceps or ventouse (vacuum extraction). The obstetrician will choose which is best for your situation.

Forceps are smooth metal instruments that are shaped like large spoons or tongs. They’re curved to fit around the baby’s head. A forceps might be recommended if labor isn’t progressing or the baby’s safety depends on an immediate delivery.

With a ventouse(vacuum extractor), the obstetrician uses suction to attach a soft or hard plastic or metal cup onto your baby’s head.

Pushing

Your midwife may encourage you to follow your instincts when your body’s telling you to push, if you don’t want to do this, your midwife will guide you.

Only start to push when you feel the need to and during contractions. If you’ve had an epidural for pain relief, you might not feel the urge to bear down as strongly, so your midwife will tell you when to push.

Make sure to take relaxing breaths and read up on positions that are more effective for giving birth.

Crowning is the moment when your baby’s head moves down the vagina can be seen completely at your vulva.

Once your baby’s head is born, most of the hard work is over. Your baby may be born covered with a white, greasy substance known as ‘vernix’, which has acted as protection in the uterus. We would then recommend placing the baby in skin contact and allow you to have time together with your new baby.

Journey To Motherhood: A mother who suffered a miscarriage on the same date in the same hospital room a year apart has given birth to a “miracle baby”. Listen to her share her story in the video at the bottom of this page.

Katie Bonful, 31, who had suffered two miscarriages, Shared her journey to motherhood. Given birth to her rainbow baby, Maximus, now a year old.

She shares her miscarriage story in the hopes that it encourages and brings hope to mothers who have experienced the loss of a child.

Motherhood

Katie’s first miscarriage:

Katie miscarried her first baby after experiencing heavy bleeding during her second trimester on March 9, 2017. Katie and her husband Richard, couldn’t wait to start a family and were overjoyed when she fell pregnant in November 2016.

Everything seemed fine at the 12-week scan but Katie grew concerned when she started getting cramping and bleeding just before her 17-week check-up.

‘Suddenly I started bleeding everywhere – the whole cubicle was covered in blood. I was completely devastated and I felt numb.

‘I was so excited and had just started telling people I was pregnant. Nothing can prepare you for losing a child and we grieved for a long time.’

Doctors broke the devastating news that the baby was unlikely to survive and Katie went into labor – giving birth to a ‘lifeless baby boy’ at St Thomas Hospital in March 2017.

Mother

Katie’s second miscarriage:

She fell pregnant again, but went into early labor and miscarried in the same hospital room at St Thomas, Westminster, on March 9, 2018.

I was 17 weeks and five days along and I was getting ready for work. I felt strange but thought the baby was having a growth spurt.

‘It felt like I needed a wee – like a pressure down there – so after work, I went to the hospital.

‘They scanned me saw that my cervix had opened at the fluid around the baby had started to flow out.

I was told the baby was unlikely to survive.

‘They contemplated an emergency stitch but only if the pain and bleeding stopped but it didn’t.

‘I went into labor and was in so much pain for about eight hours before my second son arrived stillborn. It was heart-breaking when it started happening again.

‘I thought I’d know what it felt like, but was different to the first time so I had no idea. It fell on the same date that I’d miscarried the year before.

‘Not only that but I was in the same hospital room and the nurses even recognized me.’

Pregnant women

Pregnant again:

Six months later, in August 2018, Katie fell pregnant again, but doctors told her she had a high chance of premature labor so she had weekly check-ups until she went into labor at 38 weeks. Doctors  performed a cervical stitch, a treatment to stop the cervix from opening too early during pregnancy

Gave birth to a miracle baby:

She gave birth on April 13, 2019, to a healthy 6lb 13oz boy, and Katie and her husband, Richard, 34, said rainbow baby Maximus is a ‘miracle’.

A rainbow baby is a child born to a woman after she suffers a miscarriage.

Blessed couple

She said: ‘Going through a miscarriage once is heart-breaking enough, let alone twice.

‘I couldn’t believe it when I was in the same room twice, going through the same thing again on the same date but one year on – it was like a nasty déjà vu.

She said: ‘After the second miscarriage my husband and I prayed for another child and said: “this time next year, we’ll have our little boy.”

‘Having faith helped get through such a difficult time.

‘The moment Maximus was born I was waiting for him to cry and the second he did I literally screamed in joy.

‘It was the most amazing sound I’d ever heard.

Journey To Motherhood

‘He’s such a little fighter – he was our little “rainbow” baby because he arrived after the storm.

‘It’s scarring and isolating to go through a miscarriage but there are other people who have been through it too.

‘I hope sharing my story can help others and encourage them not to suffer in silence.’

Journey To Motherhood

Journey to Motherhood Video:

Speaking to PregnancyBeyond she said “Life doesn’t always go the way we want it to or the way we plan.

As you can see in the pictures above, I am holding my precious babies.
I will always see myself as a mum of three… 2 in my heart and 1 in my arms. 💙💙🌈💙”
