Giving birth is an imperative decision each woman needs to make as it is a life-changing experience that could be either to improve a thing or make it worse. However, a few ladies might not be fortunate to conceive without having complications and experiencing surgery can be stressful for babies. At four months pregnant, Margaret Hawkins Boemer went for a routine ultrasound and found out that her daughter, Lynlee Hope, had a tumor on her spine known as a sacrococcygeal teratoma, which was diverting blood from the foetus, raising the danger of deadly heart failure. Shockingly, this was not the first terrible news of Boemer’s pregnancy. Initially, she had been pregnant with twins, yet lost one of the babies before her second trimester.

Dr. Darrell Cass, co-director of Texas Children’s Fetal Center and co-professor of surgery, obstetrics, and gynecology, and pediatrics at Baylor College Medicine who was taking care of Margaret said that the sacrococcygeal teratoma is the most widely recognized tumor which can be found in a baby; however, it is still uncommon. He additionally explained that a portion of the tumors can be exceptionally well-tolerated. So the fetus has it and could with it be conceived with it and he and his partner professor Oluyinka Olutoye can take it out after the child is born. With an extensive tumor stealing the blood supply, Boemer’s fetus was ending up sicker every day, doctors disclosed to the expectant mother and the only option given to her was difficult as lynlee’s chances of survival would be very slim.

Baby Lynlee weighed only 1lb 3oz (0.53kg) when surgeons opened the womb and at that point, the tumour was almost bigger than the baby. During the five hour surgery, LynLee’s heart virtually stopped during the process but a heart specialist kept her alive while the majority of the tumour was removed. Then at that point, the team then placed her back in her mother’s womb and sewed her uterus up. Mrs. Boemer spent the following 12 weeks on bed-rest, and Lynlee was conceived again for the second time on 6 June through Caesarean section at almost full term, weighing 5Ib and 5oz, and named after both of her grandmothers. Instantly, the hospital staff whisked the baby away to the NICU for an assessment, yet after this initial checkup, she was considered sound and taken to the nursery.

The moment when Lynlee was eight days old, a further surgery helped remove the remaining tumour from her tailbone which surgeons couldn’t reach earlier and afterward she recovered completely in the recovered in the NICU and weeks after, arrived in her family home. Lynlee would need to keep on returning to Texas Children’s Hospital for regular checkups. This uncommon tumour known as Sacrococcygeal teratoma affects baby girls four times more often than boys and baby lynlee was strong enough to have survived it even though it was very difficult for her mother. She is about seven years now and perfectly living that dream life every girl wants to live without any health problem.

Going on holiday with an infant? Erica, who has visited 38 countries with her younger daughter shares 20 awesome tips!

…

On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me: 10 diapers and wipes, 9 poop explosions, 8 oz of breast milk, 7 hrs of travel, 6 impending germy relatives, 5 pieces of baby gear, 4 overexcited grandparents, 3 modes of transportation, 2 nervous parents and a crying baby in an airplane.

Worried about taking planes, trains or automobiles for the first time with your new ornament in tow for the holidays? With these tips, you’ll be flying high with your infant and only worrying about the unidentifiable ingredients in your Aunt’s holiday cake. At 15 months old our little one has been on 85+ flights so I think it’s safe to say we’ve had some experience!

  1. Extra Extra Extra – read all about it, diaper days are here to stay! Regardless of the length of flight, I bring 1.5 days worth of diapers and wipes in my carry-on baby bag. Is it overkill? If everything goes to plan then yes. But if you get stranded somewhere, heavily delayed, or snowed in by a poopocalypse then you’ll happily take cover under your pile of diapers. I usually say minimize everything, but when it comes to diapers, the more the merrier in my book to avoid the shit hitting the airplane fan (literally).
  2. Bring more pads than the NFL starting lineup – pads in your carry-on for here, there and everywhere are necessary for a new moms lady bits…because postpartum is gross.
  3. Outfits galore for your baby Zsa Zsa Gabor – bring multiple extra outfits for the baby (aka more than just 1) and throw in an additional shirt for you and your partner as well.
  4. BYOB = Bring Your Own Bibs – dress the baby in a bib so you only have to change that, instead of their entire outfit every time they spit up. And, needless to say, bring lots of extras to keep switching out wet ones for dry ones.
  5. Baby toiletries bag – plan for any scenario by packing a solid baby toiletries bag in your carry-on with all your essentials to treat that nasally baby on the go. Check our Baby Travel Toiletries post to point you in the right direction.
  6. Pick your seat wisely to avoid the baby getting Julia Gulia’d by a drink cart – a window or middle seat is best for whoever is holding the baby, then choose an aisle seat for the diaper changing pit crew for easy bathroom access. Tip: Choose a window and aisle seat in the hopes of the middle seat remaining empty; worst case scenario one of you moves over or you can make someone awkwardly sit in between you and pass the baby over their lap.
  7. You’re going to an airport, not the Arctic Circle – don’t go all Joey Tribiani and dress the baby in everything they own. Put them in a max of 2 layers and bring a blanket in your baby bag in case it’s cold on the airplane.
  8. Leisure suits are back – fly babies in zippered jammies such as Carter’s 1-Piece Snug Fit Cotton PJs and avoid buttons or snaps like you dodge your Grandmother’s lipstick layered kisses.
  9. Easy access – we’re not talking about your lingerie here (I think that’s how we got ourselves into this situation!). Breastfeeding moms are best in easy access attire such as Rosie Pope’s Seamless Nursing Cami with padded shelf bra beneath a comfy sweater, and like your lingerie, no bra is required.
  10. Time is on your side, until it screws you – pack a few days ahead of time, leave for the airport earlier than you would have pre-baby, and assume things will take you more time than usual as you fumble through your first airport attempts with a baby.
  11. Check yo self before you wreck yo self – being a former carry-on only traveler, it took some time to adjust to the checked baggage stage of life, but it’s by far the way to go when traveling with a baby. Free hands, full checked bags can’t lose, so ditch those bags as early as possible (curbside even) and leave that valuable hand space ready for your baby.
  12. Give your baby gear abandonment issues – check the car seat, and even the stroller, at the check-in counter and just wear the baby on you, or use a travel friendly stroller like the Babyzen Yoyo to minimize your life. Car seats and strollers are free checked baggage on almost all airlines, so don’t worry about the cost.
  13. The welcomed kind of preemie – TSA Precheck is the golden ticket to make you fly through security without removing your computer or shoes so you can focus on the baby.
  14. Like with losing your virginity, it’s best to set expectations – tell the flight attendant it’s your first flight. They are magical keepers of all things baby travel wisdom.
  15. Neck and arms need love too – bring a travel pillow that you’d normally use for your neck and wedge it under your arm to comfortably hold the baby on an airplane armrest.
  16. Use boob, bottle or beer to pop it like it’s hot on takeoff and landing – keep those jaws moving and decrease ear discomfort for all ages during times of pressure changes in the cabin. Beer is obviously for the oversized children we call our partners.
  17. Don’t poke the bear – if your baby falls asleep before takeoff or landing, do not wake them up to feed them for ear pressure issues. Letting them sleep through those moments is just as effective.
  18. Replace toys with the original FaceTime – since we’re talking 0-6 months of age here, your baby requires little to no toys for a flight. For 0-3 months toys are just extra things to fumble and drop, and your newborn doesn’t need them at all. For 3-6 months bring one or two teethers with clippable straps. In general, use your face to entertain them, and they’ll find it hysterical. Can you blame them?!
  19. Strap ons for the win – don’t ever let that pacifier hit the germ infested airplane floor. Strap it to your babe or to yourself and bring extras along with sanitizing wipes. Pretend like you’re playing the “hot lava” game we played as kids using the airplane floor as the no-fly zone.
  20. Be mindful about germs – bring a nursing cover even if you’re not breast feeding so the baby can eat, sleep and be protected by strange coughs from seat 3E.
Like bees, babies can smell fear, so CHILL OUT! Traveling with an infant is really no different than going out on the town with them, so stop worrying yourself sick about a few hours on public transportation – it’ll be totally fine if you are prepared and stay calm. Just avoid getting snowed in with no supplies or leaking like Edward Snowden by taking the advice above. So fly yourself towards some family babysitting and have Happy Holidays, from our family to yours!

Nurturing Yourself and Your Baby: A Guided Meditation for a Stress-Free Pregnancy ( Video)

In pregnancy, stress can have a negative impact on your health and the health of your baby. It is beneficial to have a stress-free pregnancy and this is why guided meditation is highly recommended for nurturing yourself and your baby during pregnancy.

Women have so much to worry about during pregnancy, from concerns about the health of their unborn child, to intense morning sickness/ fatigue, to unexpected changes to their bodies and everything else! It is important to curb this feeling of anxiety and flow through this beautiful phase of your life with ease.

Guided meditation during pregnancy is so powerful as it can help release negative thoughts and feelings that can leave one uneasy for days on end.

Committing to a short daily guided meditation during pregnancy can make it easier to deal with whatever pregnancy throws your way.

Benefits of Meditation During Pregnancy

  1. Can help reduce cortisol, which is the hormone associated with stress.
  2. The deep breathing of meditation lowers heart rates and regulates blood pressure. This ignites the parasympathetic nervous system and encourages slower breathing.
  3. It can quiet the mind and body while enhancing inner peace
  4. Meditation increases the natural melatonin levels to help with more restful sleep.
  5. May help reduce the fear of labor, decrease the use of pain relief and lower the risk of postnatal depression.
  6. Fosters a better connection with your baby
  7. Reduces negative emotions.
  8. Helps regulate hormonal changes that can lead to mood swings, increased appetite and nausea.

A miracle is born! Capt. Kelvin Riddle, a tactical officer at the U.S. Military Academy, knew his wife would eventually give birth to their fourth child, Hudsyn Claire Riddle. However, he did not foresee how that unique birth would transpire, for Lindsey Riddle would give birth under painstaking circumstances that would speak to the virtue and unyielding strength of motherhood.

The morning began like any other day on June 17. Kelvin was ready to hear the buzz of his alarm at four in the morning to prepare for Cadet Field Training.

“I thought I would stay in the field overnight with my cadets, but my wife woke me up at 3:45 a.m. and said, ‘hey, it’s time,’ˮ Kelvin said.

He got his kids ready and took them to his friendʼs house in Stony Lonesome, which was seven minutes away from his house.

“Before I could get passed the stadium from my house, my wife called me and said, ‘hey, I can feel the baby’s head,’ˮ he explained. “I started freaking out a bit and I sped up a little bit more to get the kids up the hill and about three to four minutes later, she called me and said, ‘hey, I’m holding the baby.’ I thought she was joking. ˮ

He quickly dropped his kids off at his friendʼs house and moved with frantic urgency back to his car and called 911. The firefighters and military police on base immediately responded. As soon as he got down the hill from Stony and back to his house, the firefighters were outside his door preparing to enter.

“My wife opened the door and she was literally standing there with the baby in her arms,ˮ Kelvin said. “Me, the firefighters and MP’s were shocked and wondering what just happened. And so, we immediately got her seated. Once we got her seated, the firefighter clamped the umbilical cord then I cut the umbilical cord.ˮ

The firefighters asked Lindsey a series of questions to gauge her health. Soon after, the ambulance came to pick her up and transport her from Keller Hospital to Montefiore St. Lukeʼs Cornwall Hospital for follow-up care.

For Lindsey, the experience was beautiful yet surreal. Before the birth, Lindsey simply believed she had to use the restroom before she went to the hospital. As she exited the restroom and made her way into the kitchen, she felt the urge to push.

She listened to her body and grabbed the bar stool in her kitchen. She gave it one good push to alleviate the pain but didn’t believe she was having the baby yet. ( A miracle is born)

“She was giving a push to re-adjust the baby,ˮ Kelvin said. “With that one push, the baby crowned. Another push came right behind it and she pushed the baby further out. Her instincts kicked in. She didnʼt want the baby to hit the floor because she was standing.ˮ

She reached under and grabbed the babyʼs head as she came out smoothly. Then, she grabbed the baby carefully and flipped her upwards to unwrap the umbilical cord around her neck.

“Thank god there was no health complications. Everything was completely fine, but it was definitely an interesting birth. Our two dogs got to witness the whole thing and they canʼt tell me about it,ˮ Kelvin said. “She was very pleased about the professionalism the firefighters and MP’s maintained given the extent of the emergency. I’m sure this doesn’t happen often at West Point.ˮ

Hudsyn, now a few weeks old, is said to be the last child the Riddles have and they are thrilled to welcome their miracle child to West Point. A miracle is born

3 Tips To Sleep Better During Pregnancy

Hey pregnant ladies — now you have one more reason to try and get a good night’s sleep. Here are proven tips to sleep better during pregnancy! Poor sleep can disrupt your baby’s immune system as well as lead to a lower birth rate and other complications.  It can be almost as hard to get a good night’s sleep when you’re pregnant as it is when you’re a new parent.

So future mamas now is the time to get plenty of sleep! Okay? Okay.

1️⃣. Work with your doctor. This should probably be your first step, before trying any home remedies. There may be significant health issues or symptoms that are causing your sleeplessness (besides pregnancy, which is not a medical condition, I know). And your doctor will know about any complications you should be aware of.

2️⃣Set the stage. Before you go to bed, dim the lights and try to limit your screen time. Reading a book or magazine before bed will better help your mind to relax. Make sure your bedroom is cool. Don’t bring anything work-related into your bedroom if you can help it, and definitely not into bed with you.

3️⃣. Get some exercise. There are many reasons to exercise during pregnancy — one of them is that it will help you sleep better. Exercise in moderation and check with your doctor about any modifications you should make. Even walking and yoga will help.

Endometriosis:

I’ll Discuss Endometriosis With My Daughter – Tia Mowry, By Shenna Foster (Endometriosis Foundation of America).

Former Sister, Sister star Tia Mowry is due any minute now, and she can hardly wait to meet her “miracle” daughter.
“I was literally just saying, I had a contraction,” Mowry, 39, exclusively tells The Blossom. “I was like, ‘Oh my god.'”
The Braxton Hicks are bittersweet.
For years, Mowry, struggled with endometriosis and heartbreaking infertility while desperately trying to conceive.

“I never felt like giving up,” says the actress, who is already mom to 6-year-old son, Cree. “But, that doesn’t mean that I wasn’t overwhelmed with negative thoughts. My anxiety level just went through the roof. I was just feeling inadequate. I even went through a little bit of depression. There were times when I would be taking a pregnancy test, and I wouldn’t be pregnant, and I would just cry. I’m talking about those cries where you slide down the wall, and you’re sitting Indian-style—next to the toilet.”

As painful as those moments are to relive, one day, Mowry says she’s going to fill her daughter in on endometriosis, which affects an estimated 200 million women worldwide, and, scientists suspect, can have a genetic link.

“I will be the mom who’s not afraid to discuss all things. I want us to be able to be open and honest with each other. Even if that entails me opening up about my struggles with endo. I want to be open with her about everything. Everything. And that’s my goal.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/BhMa0QPhomf/?utm_source=ig_embed

She’ll have lots of harrowing tales to tell. Mowry recalls moments where the pain would wash over her while driving with her twin sister and The Real co-host Tamera Mowry, who would have to take the wheel while Tia slunk into the backseat. Another time, as the twins sat in a meeting for a proposed series, Mowry remembers almost blacking out. She was finally diagnosed with endometriosis in 2006 at age 30, via laparoscopy, after a decade of suffering. Her delay in diagnosis is shared by millions of women with endometriosis as the wait continues for a definitive non-invasive diagnostic test.

During that surgery, she says endometriosis lesions were removed from her uterus. Her symptoms were relieved temporarily, but she needed a second laparoscopic surgery about a year later to re-treat the disease.

Hopefully, the worst is over for Mowry. Soon after the back-to-back procedures, she wed actor Cory Hardrict in 2008, and the two welcomed Cree three years later.

“Cree, I consider a miracle, and my baby girl, I consider a miracle. So for me, every day has been a celebration, even through the nausea, even through the edema, the swelling. I’m just celebrating all of the milestones throughout this pregnancy, and I’m taking every day with gratitude, really.”

But the blissful pregnancy has been a bit, well, bumpy.

“With my baby girl, the first and the second trimester was heaven. I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is amazing.’ I was like, ‘Yes, let’s do this again, Cory. Right after this baby, we’re going to go ahead and try for a third one. But the third trimester has been kicking my behind.”

Now that the Whole New You cookbook author and Quick Fix YouTube series creator has put the finishing touches on her nursery—a patina of calming earth tones—all Mowry can do is eagerly await her daughter’s arrival.

“This is an incredible blessing for me and my husband,” she adds. “I am so incredibly excited to meet my baby girl.” (Article was first published here)
